Why more isn't better at home
The catch is airflow. ULPA's denser media resists air more, so for the same fan it moves less air — meaning a lower effective CADR and slower room cleaning. In a home, what matters is clean air delivered per hour, and HEPA already removes 99.97% of fine particles. Chasing the last 0.02% with ULPA usually means cleaning your room more slowly — a poor trade. This is the same "airflow × efficiency" logic behind HEPA vs MERV-13.
Where ULPA belongs
ULPA earns its keep where near-total particle removal is critical and airflow can be engineered around it — semiconductor fabs, pharmaceutical cleanrooms, some medical settings. For allergies, dust, smoke and everyday air, a true HEPA unit with good airflow is the better real-world performer.
