In one line: most cup-holder "car purifiers" move too little air to do much. A car cabin is small but pollution gets in fast from traffic — the biggest wins are your car's own cabin filter and recirculate mode, with a genuine (ozone-free, filter-based) portable unit as a useful extra.
Why the tiny ones underwhelm
Cleaning any space depends on clean-air delivery — how much filtered air the device actually moves. Palm-sized car gadgets have tiny fans and filters, so their CADR is very low; in a cabin constantly taking in fresh (polluted) air on a busy road, they can't keep up. Worse, some are ionisers that emit ozone — the last thing you want in a sealed cabin.
What actually helps in a car
- Replace the cabin (pollen) filter on schedule — the single most effective step; a clogged one lets more PM2.5 through.
- Use recirculate mode in heavy traffic or tunnels so you're not drawing in exhaust; switch back to fresh air periodically to manage CO2.
- A real portable filter unit — a proper HEPA/MERV-13 unit (ozone-free) run on 12V can help, especially parked or on longer journeys.
What to avoid
Skip anything marketed as "ozone", "ionic" or "plasma" for an enclosed cabin, and be sceptical of dramatic claims from devices with fans smaller than a phone. If it doesn't state real airflow, it probably has very little.
