Where to place an air purifier
In one line: put it where air can flow freely in and out — not jammed against a wall, behind a sofa or under a shelf — in the room you spend most time in (usually the bedroom), and ideally near where pollution enters or is created.
The basics
- Give it breathing room. A purifier pulls air in and pushes it out; blocking the intake or outlet with furniture, curtains or a wall drops its effective clean-air delivery. Leave clear space on all sides.
- Prioritise the bedroom. You spend ~8 hours there breathing the same air, so it's the highest-value room to run one continuously.
- Near the source helps. By a doorway or window (for incoming pollen/traffic), near the kitchen edge (for cooking particles), or near a litter tray — catching pollutants closer to where they appear.
- Raise it a little if you can. Many units draw air better slightly off the floor; a sturdy low table or stand can help circulation (follow your model's guidance).
What to avoid
Don't hide it in a corner behind furniture, don't put it in a cupboard or alcove with no airflow, and don't place it right next to a humidifier's mist (damp can clog filters). In an open-plan space, position it centrally or run two units rather than tucking one in a far corner.
