UV-C air purifiers: do they work, and are they safe?

What UV-C is meant to do
UV-C is short-wavelength ultraviolet light that can damage the DNA/RNA of bacteria, viruses and mould, stopping them reproducing. It's used effectively in some water and surface disinfection, and in specialised in-duct systems with long exposure. That's the theory behind adding a small UV-C lamp inside an air purifier.
The catch: contact time
Killing microbes with UV needs enough dose = intensity × time. In a purifier, air rushes past the little lamp in a fraction of a second — far too briefly for a small lamp to deliver a meaningful dose to most passing microbes. So the UV-C stage in a typical consumer unit usually does little, while the HEPA or MERV-13 filter is what actually removes the particles (including virus-carrying ones) by trapping them.
The ozone caveat
Some UV-C lamps (particularly certain wavelengths) produce ozone as a by-product — a lung irritant you don't want indoors. If you consider a UV-C unit, look for one explicitly stated to be ozone-free, and never one marketed as combining UV with deliberate "activated oxygen"/ozone.
Bottom line: don't buy a purifier for its UV-C lamp. Buy it for its filtration and airflow; treat any ozone-free UV-C as a harmless extra, not the main event.
