Do air purifiers actually work?

In one line: yes — a correctly sized purifier with a genuine particle filter measurably lowers airborne particles, allergens and smoke in a room, and can reduce airborne virus levels. It won't fix a source you keep feeding, remove gases without carbon, or clean a room it's too small for.

What they reliably do

An air purifier draws room air through a filter and returns it cleaner. With a true-HEPA or MERV-13 filter it captures the fine PM2.5 particles behind most indoor air-quality concerns: dust, pollen, pet dander, mould spores and smoke. Run one with a monitor and you'll watch levels drop after cooking or when outdoor pollution drifts in. Ventilation studies in schools and offices show that raising a room's clean-air rate lowers airborne pathogen concentrations too — filtration is one of the ways to get there.

What they can't do

A purifier can't out-clean a constant source — if something keeps generating particles or fumes, reduce the source too. It doesn't lower CO2 (only ventilation does that), and a particle-only filter won't remove gases, VOCs or odours. Be wary of ionisers and ozone generators marketed as "filterless" — some produce ozone, a lung irritant.
