What is a Corsi-Rosenthal box?
In one line: a Corsi-Rosenthal box is a simple, high-airflow air purifier made by surrounding a box fan with four or five MERV-13 filters. Because the air passes through a huge total filter area, it delivers a very high clean-air delivery rate cheaply and quietly — which is why it took off during the pandemic.
How it works
Named after Richard Corsi and Jim Rosenthal, who popularised it in 2020, the design is deceptively clever. A single filter in front of a fan chokes airflow. Surround the fan with several filters instead — arranged as a cube with the fan on top — and the same fan meets far less resistance across the larger combined area. The result: a lot more air moved, through a lot more filter media, at a low fan speed. That means high CADR, low noise and low running cost.
Why it's so effective
- Airflow wins. Cleaning a room is about clean-air delivery, not just filter grade. The multi-filter layout maximises airflow, so it turns a room's air over quickly (see air changes per hour).
- MERV-13 media captures ~90%+ of airborne particles including PM2.5, at a fraction of the cost of proprietary HEPA cartridges.
- Cheap and repairable. Filters are standard sizes and easy to swap.
DIY vs pre-built
A DIY build (a box fan, four MERV-13 filters, tape and a cardboard shroud) costs very little and is a superb STEM project. The trade-offs are looks, noise tuning and safety certification. Pre-built versions keep the same high-airflow principle but add tidier enclosures, quieter tuned fans and electrical/emissions certification — better for running all day in a living room, office or classroom.

FAQ
Is a Corsi-Rosenthal box as good as a "real" air purifier? For particle removal in a home, yes — often better per pound, because it moves so much air. It doesn't remove gases or odours without added carbon.
Is it loud? Run at a moderate speed it's reasonably quiet; the point of the multi-filter design is that it doesn't need full speed to clean well. Pre-built versions are quieter still.
