What is an activated carbon filter?

In one line: an activated carbon filter removes gases, odours and VOCs by adsorbing them onto carbon's enormous internal surface. It's the partner to a particle filter — the particle filter catches dust and smoke particles; the carbon handles the smells and fumes a particle filter can't touch.

How it works

Activated carbon is charcoal processed to riddle it with microscopic pores, giving a few grams a surface area measured in hundreds of square metres. As air passes through, gas molecules stick to that surface — a process called adsorption (not absorption). That's how it strips out cooking smells, smoke odour, paint and furniture VOCs, and traffic fumes.

Why particle filters can't do this

A HEPA or MERV-13 filter is a fine mechanical sieve for particles. Gas molecules are far smaller and pass straight through. This is why a "HEPA air purifier" with no carbon will clear the haze from a room but leave the smell behind.

How much carbon do you need?

Not all "carbon filters" are equal. A thin carbon-coated mesh (a few grams) does little and saturates fast; a deep bed or pellets (hundreds of grams to kilograms) removes far more and lasts much longer. If odours or VOCs are your main concern, look for the weight of carbon, not just the word "carbon" on the box.

Lifespan

Carbon saturates over time and can't be "washed" clean — once full it stops adsorbing and needs replacing (typically every few months to a year, depending on the amount and how hard it's working). Running out of carbon capacity is silent, so replace on schedule.

Can I reactivate a used carbon filter at home? Not effectively — proper reactivation needs industrial heat. Replace it instead.

Do I need carbon and a HEPA/MERV filter? For most homes, yes if you have odours or VOCs — many units combine both in one filter.
