Air purifier for smoke, explained
In one line: smoke is two things at once — fine PM2.5 particles (removed by a HEPA/MERV-13 filter) and gases/odour (removed only by activated carbon). To deal with smoke properly you want both, plus enough airflow to clear a spike fast.
The particle side
Whether it's tobacco, a wood burner, cooking or outdoor smoke drifting in, the health-relevant part is the cloud of ultrafine particles. These sit right in the PM2.5 range that a HEPA or MERV-13 filter captures well. Because smoke arrives in sudden spikes, high CADR matters — you want to turn the room's air over quickly to clear it, not slowly.
The odour side
The smell of smoke is gas-phase, so a particle filter removes the haze but leaves the smell. Removing smoke odour needs a substantial activated carbon stage. A thin carbon coating won't cut it for persistent smoke smell — look for a real carbon bed.
What to look for
- High CADR (especially "smoke CADR") to clear spikes fast.
- Genuine activated carbon — by weight — for the odour.
- MERV-13 or true HEPA for the particles.
- During heavy outdoor smoke, also keep windows/doors closed and run the unit continuously.
