Air purifier for a garage or workshop, explained

In one line: workshops throw off two things — fine dust (sawdust, grinding, sanding) that a strong filter captures, and fumes (solvents, paint, exhaust) that need activated carbon. You want high airflow, a robust pre-filter, and carbon for the fumes — plus good ventilation and PPE for heavy work.

Dust — the particle side

Fine airborne dust from woodworking, sanding, grinding and cutting is a real respiratory hazard, and the finest fraction (PM2.5 and smaller) lingers longest. A high-CADR unit with a HEPA or MERV-13 filter clears this airborne dust, but a workshop generates a lot — so a strong, ideally washable pre-filter is essential to catch the coarse stuff and stop the main filter clogging fast.

Fumes — the gas side

Solvents, spray paint, adhesives, and engine exhaust are gases, so a particle filter won't touch them — you need a substantial activated carbon stage. Even then, an air purifier is a supplement, not a substitute for ventilation and source extraction during heavy fume work.

Safety note: an air purifier is not respiratory protection. For serious dust or fumes (e.g. spraying, sanding hardwoods, running an engine), ventilate, use source extraction at the tool, and wear appropriate PPE. Never run a petrol engine in a closed garage — carbon monoxide is deadly and a purifier does not remove it.

What to look for

Will an air purifier remove sawdust? It removes the fine airborne dust that stays suspended; heavier chips still need sweeping and tool extraction. A strong pre-filter is key.

Does it remove exhaust fumes / carbon monoxide? Carbon can adsorb some fume gases, but a purifier does not remove carbon monoxide — never rely on one; ventilate and never run engines in a closed space.
