Do air purifiers help with viruses and COVID?

In one line: yes, as one layer — a well-sized HEPA or MERV-13 purifier removes airborne virus-carrying particles from a room, lowering exposure. It's not a standalone cure or a substitute for vaccines, staying home when ill, or ventilation.

How they help

Many respiratory viruses, including the one that causes COVID-19, spread partly through fine airborne aerosols that can linger and travel across a room. Those aerosols are particles — in the size range that HEPA and MERV-13 filters capture well. Running a purifier that turns the room's air over several times an hour (air changes per hour) steadily removes these particles, reducing how much virus-laden aerosol builds up. Real-world studies in schools and offices link higher clean-air rates (from ventilation and/or filtration) to lower transmission.
