Winter damp and mould: why it spikes and what helps
In one line: winter is peak mould season because we close windows, heat some rooms and not others, and generate moisture indoors — so condensation feeds mould. Control it with three levers: reduce moisture, ventilate, and filter the airborne spores.
Why winter makes it worse
Cold weather drives a perfect storm for damp: windows stay shut, so moisture from cooking, showering and drying laundry has nowhere to go; warm, moist indoor air hits cold surfaces (windows, external walls, behind furniture) and condenses; and unheated rooms stay cold enough for that condensation to linger. Give mould a few days of damp surface and it takes hold — then it releases spores into the air you breathe.
The three levers
- Reduce moisture at source. Lids on pans, extractor fans on when cooking or showering, dry laundry outside or in a vented tumble dryer, and a dehumidifier in persistently damp rooms.
- Ventilate. Short bursts of cross-ventilation clear humid air; trickle vents and periodic window-opening (even briefly on cold days) make a real difference.
- Filter the spores. An air purifier won't stop mould growing, but a HEPA or MERV-13 unit captures the airborne spores so you breathe fewer — valuable in bedrooms and while you tackle the source. See air purifier for mould.
Key point: a purifier manages the spores in the air; it does not fix damp on the wall. Winter mould control is moisture-first — filtration is the third layer, not the whole answer.
