What a purifier does — and doesn't do — for mould
Mould reproduces by releasing tiny spores into the air. Those spores are particles, so a good filter removes them as room air passes through, reducing the spore load you inhale and that can settle to start new growth. What a purifier cannot do is treat mould on a wall or stop it returning — because mould grows wherever there's enough moisture. Run a purifier and you'll breathe fewer spores; ignore the damp and the mould keeps coming back.
The order that actually works
- Fix the moisture — the root cause. Address leaks, condensation, poor ventilation and cold spots; a dehumidifier helps in damp rooms.
- Remove existing mould — clean affected surfaces properly (and get professional help for large areas).
- Filter the air — a high-CADR MERV-13/HEPA unit keeps airborne spore levels down, especially useful in bedrooms and during and after cleaning.
A note on smell
Musty mould odour is a gas, so a particle filter won't remove the smell itself — that needs activated carbon. But the smell is a signal: if it lingers, there's still active mould or damp to deal with.
