HEPA vs carbon filter: which do you need?

In one line: they're not rivals — they remove different things. A HEPA (or MERV-13) filter removes particles; activated carbon removes gases and odours. Which you need depends on your problem, and many people need both.

They target different pollutants

This is the most useful distinction in air purification. A HEPA/MERV particle filter is a fine mechanical sieve — brilliant for dust, pollen, pet dander, smoke particles and other PM2.5. But gases and smells are individual molecules far too small for it, and they pass straight through. Activated carbon does the opposite: it adsorbs gases, VOCs and odours, but does little for particles. You need the right tool for your pollutant.

So which should you buy?

If your concern is purely particles (allergies, dust, pollen), a good particle filter alone is enough. If it's purely smell or fumes, you need carbon. In practice many situations — smoke, a busy road, cooking in an open-plan home — involve both, so a unit with a HEPA/MERV-13 filter plus a genuine carbon stage covers you. Just make sure the carbon is a real amount, not a token coating.
