Are air purifiers worth it?

In one line: for the right problem — allergies, asthma triggers, smoke, pets, or living somewhere polluted — a well-chosen purifier is genuinely worth it and cheap to run. It's not worth it if you buy an undersized or gimmicky unit, or expect it to fix damp, CO2 or smells it can't touch.

When they're worth it

When they're not (or where money gets wasted)

How to make it worth it

Buy for your actual problem, size it properly, choose a genuine filter (HEPA or MERV-13) with low wattage and standard filters, and run it where it counts (usually the bedroom). Do that and the value is clear; skip those steps and it's easy to waste money. See do air purifiers work? for the evidence.

FAQ

Are cheap air purifiers worth it? Only if they deliver real CADR with a genuine filter. Many cheap units are underpowered or use weak "HEPA-type" media — check the specs, not the price alone.

Is it worth running one all the time? Yes for a low-wattage unit — continuous running keeps particles low for pennies a day.
