Air purifier for cigarette smoke, explained
In one line: a purifier captures cigarette smoke's fine particles with a HEPA/MERV-13 filter and reduces the smell with substantial activated carbon — but it can't fully clear the air while someone is actively smoking, and it doesn't remove third-hand smoke soaked into surfaces.
Two problems: particles and tar/odour
Cigarette smoke is a heavy load of very fine PM2.5 particles plus a strong gas/odour component (and sticky tar). The particle filter handles the visible smoke and the health-relevant fine particles; the persistent stale smell is gas-phase and needs a real carbon bed, not a thin coating. What it can and can't do
- Can: greatly reduce lingering smoke particles and odour between cigarettes, and clear a room faster after smoking.
- Can't: keep air clean while someone smokes beside it — the source out-paces any purifier.
- Can't: remove "third-hand smoke" — the residue absorbed into walls, carpets and soft furnishings, which needs cleaning, not filtering.
- Carbon saturates faster with heavy smoke, so budget for more frequent replacement (filter change guide).
Get the most from it
Use a high-CADR unit with generous carbon, run it continuously, smoke as far from it (ideally outdoors) as possible, and ventilate. The purifier then keeps the residual particles and odour down rather than fighting a live source.
