Do air purifiers help with smells and odours?
In one line: a plain HEPA purifier removes particles, not smells — odours are gases. To cut cooking, pet, smoke and musty smells you need a genuine activated-carbon stage, and the more carbon, the better and longer it works.
Why HEPA alone doesn't touch smell
Smells are gas molecules — far smaller than the particles a HEPA or MERV-13 filter can trap, so they pass straight through. That's why a particle-only purifier can leave the air visibly cleaner but still smelling of last night's dinner. Removing odours needs adsorption, which is what carbon does (see VOCs & activated carbon).
What carbon can and can't do
- Handles well: cooking smells, pet odours, general mustiness, cigarette and general smoke odour, and many VOCs.
- Struggles with: very strong or constant sources — a thin carbon "wrap" saturates fast. Big odour jobs need a substantial carbon bed and regular replacement.
- Won't fix the source: for damp/musty smells, filtration helps the air but you still need to deal with the moisture and mould.
What to look for
Choose a unit that pairs HEPA/MERV-13 with a real activated-carbon stage measured in hundreds of grams (or more), not a token pre-filter coating.
